Another testament to how much things have changed is that the first opening act, Honor Society, is the first group signed to the Jonas Brothers' own label. Honor Society is a quartet of skilled musicians who made the most of their opportunity to appear on the huge stage, attacking it with boundless energy. All they need is a few strong songs and a sustained popular taste for boy bands, and they could be headlining in a few years.

Pop-rock band Honor Society moves to head of class

Posted: 21 Aug 2009 | Melody

Honor Society has been releasing infectious pop-rock tunes since 2005, but the band's goal of releasing an album always remained out of reach.

"At the time, we were a struggling band, so an EP was all we could afford," frontman Michael Bruno says. The band released two EPs, including 2007's "A Tale of Risky Business," which drummer Alex Noyes decided to send to some friends -- who also happened to be friends with the Jonas Brothers.

Two years later, Honor Society is playing stadiums, opening for the Jonases and Jordin Sparks. "Fashionably Late," the outfit's cheekily titled debut, is set for release September 15 on a yet-to-be-named joint-venture label between Hollywood Records and Jonas Brothers. The album, co-written by Honor Society and John Fields and executive-produced by the Jonas Brothers, is set to bring the band's multilayered hooks and earnest lyrics to a wider platform.

The Jonas Brothers have acted as mentors, helping Honor Society's members hone their craft, giving them advice on their live show and co-producing a few tracks on "Late."

Even without the Jonas Brothers' assistance, Honor Society's tireless promotion has quickly raised its profile. The band performed on various local news stations throughout 2009. Constant activity on social networks has resulted in 3 million MySpace plays.

Honor Society also has given free acoustic shows across the country to build its fan base, frequently announcing them the day of the performance on Twitter. The band also gave acoustic performances of "Where Are You Now," the tender single on the soundtrack to the Summit Entertainment film "Bandslam," in various movie theaters at premieres for the teen-friendly movie.

"We love popping up, doing acoustic performances and then tweeting about them," bassist Andrew Lee says. "We've always wanted to be available to our fans and have utilized resources like MySpace and Twitter to make that happen."

Leading up to the release of "Late," Honor Society will be on the road as part of the Jonas Brothers' tour while simultaneously headlining its Full Moon Crazy club tour.

Bruno says that as much as he loves the intimacy of club shows, the arena trek has been an incredible experience. "You dream of playing arenas when running around as a kid playing air guitar," he says.

Interview: Honor Society

Posted: 21 Aug 2009 | Melody

Yesterday I had the chance to talk with Honor Society. The band members are Michael Bruno, Jason Rosen, Andrew Lee and Alexander Noyes. Currently they are on tour with the Jonas Brothers but also simultaneously headlining they're own tour called The Full Moon Crazy Tour.

In the May issue of Rolling Stone Magazine Honor Society was named as one of the six breakout bands to watch from Bamboozle 2009.

Obviously with two tours going on these guys are very busy. Here's what they had to say:

CH: How did the band get started?

HS: We grew up together and have known each other for at least 15 years. We played in a few different bands through school before starting Honor Society 2 years ago.

CH: How would you describe your music to someone who might not know you that well.

HS: Upbeat, Pop Rock with some R&B Flare. We like Michael Jackson, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

CH: Next week you are coming to Cleveland and you are playing two shows. Are you ready for that and do you normally play two shows in one day?

HS: It's pretty normal to play two shows a day. We are lucky to be on tour with Jonas Brothers and have the opportunity to also do the Full Moon Crazy Tour. We've done 4 or 5 performances in one day.

CH: I see you are all on Twitter. How do you like using it and who Tweets the most out of the band?

HS: We love Twitter. We have promoted our Pinkberry Parking Lot Parties using Twitter. We send out a tweet about where we'll be and fans come and hang out with us.

CH: What is your least favorite thing about being on tour?

HS: Getting laundry done.

CH: What's next for you after touring this summer?

HS: Most likely we will be doing a fall tour to promote our album, "Fashionably Late". We'll be doing many other things to promote that I'm sure. We also have a part in the new "Alvin and the Chipmunk's 2" movie which comes out on Christmas day.

CH: You've been to a lot of cities recently. What has been your favorite stop or favorite venue on this tour?

HS: Not sure we have a favorite. Every city has been great. We have a large fan base on myspace so it's been nice to see everyone coming out to our shows. We've traveled across The United States and have had the chance to see many cities, all special in a different way.

CH: What is your favorite song to perform?

HS: Full Moon Crazy.

CH: What has been your biggest challenge as a band so far.

HS: Just getting our music out there. Trying to think of creative ways to promote our music. We credit myspace 150% to the success of getting our name and music out there.

CH: Who writes your music?

HS: Usually we come up with a title or a song concept and then we all collaborate with each other. The Jonas Brothers have also collaborated with us.

CH: Your album, "Fashionably Late" is going to release on September 15th. Any plans to celebrate this day?

HS: Yes. We've talked about doing something in New York with our families and possibly something in LA where we spend a lot of our time.

Honor Society will be opening for the Jonas Brothers at Quicken Loans arena here in Cleveland on August 27th. Early that same day Honor Society will perform at the House of Blues in Cleveland as part of the Full Moon Crazy Tour. You can buy tickets for both shows at Ticketmaster.com

Posted: 21 Aug 2009 | Monica

As promised, here are the lyrics to the FIRST SINGLE off our debut album, FASHIONABLY LATE - the song is called OVER YOU...check it out:

VERSE 1
Got another question that I need answered but you won’t speak to me
Got another problem that I need solvin when are you gonna see
Don’t act like you don’t care cause I know you do, yeah you do

CHORUS
But I just can’t figure it out, I’m not over you
And I just can’t leave it alone, I’m not over you

VERSE 2
What happened to the days when I knew all the ways to make your body move
Try to get it back but the distance grows I know you feel it too
I can’t act like I don’t care cause I do, yeah I do

CHORUS
But I just can’t figure it out, I’m not over you
And I just can’t leave it alone, I’m not over you
And you just won’t pick up the phone, I’m not over you
And I know I’ll never get through, I’m not over you

BRIDGE
Ripped up the pictures of you and me
I tried seeing other girls
But they were just a distraction
Never the same attraction
I’m going crazy over you

CHORUS
But I just can’t figure it out, I’m not over you
And I just can’t leave it alone, I’m not over you
And you just won’t pick up the phone, I’m not over you
And I know I’ll never get through, I’m not over you

Boy-band quartet is on a major roll

Posted: 20 Aug 2009 | Melody

Two years ago the Jonas Brothers were opening for Miley Cyrus at Time Warner Cable Arena. Nine months later the trio was selling out arenas and amphitheaters on its own. Could Honor Society, the handpicked quartet opening for the Jonas Brothers on Friday, be next?

The cards are definitely stacked in the New Jersey pop-rock quartet's favor, with its single currently hitting radio, an opening slot on the Jonas Brothers' tour, endorsements from MTV and “Rolling Stone,” songs on the soundtracks for “Bandslam,” “Wizards of Waverly Place” and December's “Alvin & the Chipmunks II,” and a debut album out Sept. 15 on the Jonas' new label.

Forming two years ago, Honor Society built momentum touring regionally and through MySpace and YouTube. Last summer's “A Tale of Risky Business” EP caught the ears of drummer Alexander Noyes' former employers – the Jonas Brothers.

“That was the connection,” Noyes, who briefly backed the Jo Bros, said Tuesday from Tampa, Fla. “I was friends with Kevin, Nick and Joe. That EP made its way to the boys and from there we've had a great musical partnership.”

A Mexico City gig with team Jonas last November followed, and in June the band hopped on the current world tour as an opening act (along with Jordin Sparks). Both perform at Time Warner Cable Arena on Friday. Honor Society will then head to the Fillmore to headline its own Full Moon Crazy all ages after-party.

Although the band has spent months working on its forthcoming debut “Fashionably Late,” the guys didn't actually sign with the Jonas' as-yet-unnamed label until this summer. But with the album's release looming, the band is on the fast track. Last week the group was a presenter at the Teen Choice Awards, a gig it squeezed in before sprinting across town for its opening set.

“We were sitting in the audience. We saw Miley Cyrus' performance,” keyboardist Jason Rosen said. “We presented the award, got right off stage, got into a car, got to The Staples Center and literally ran out on to the stage.”

Honor Society may teeter between boy band pop and Jimmy Eat World, but its influences are classic rock and soul, according to Rosen.

“Michael Jackson's ‘Thriller.' That's a perfect album. We'd shoot for that,” he said, when asked what albums came to mind as the band recorded “Fashionably Late” with producer John Fields in Los Angeles. “Prince's ‘1999.' Stevie Wonder. We're kind of influenced by rock, too, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. (It's about) having an album from beginning to end that tells a story, where every song is key and there are no songs you want to skip.”

No matter what level of success the disc and the association with the JBs brings them, Rosen says they've created a finished product the group is proud of.

“We were meticulous about how we wanted it to sound,” he said. “It's the album we always wanted to make.”
