quartet of young men
Posted: 05 Jul 2009 | Monica
The Jonas Brothers are not the new Beatles. They are a talented, ambitious, determined, massively successful pop trio whose romantic hits are aimed square at their target demographic -- young women.
While it is unwise to ignore the musical tastes of young women lest you appear hopelessly out of touch, little girls scream over all sorts of things -- puppies, thunderstorms, androgynous pop idols.
FEMALE DELIRIUM
Parents (or grandparents) may remember the scenes of female delirium that greeted the Beatles in the early days, but we'll have to put that down to coincidence.
A similar scene was witnessed at Rexall Place last night -- and despite a night of terrific entertainment for the kids, there were no signs the Jonas Brothers are destined to become the greatest band of this or any other generation.
Don't you think they would've come up with a Sgt. Peppers by now?
These are my preliminary results of a careful study of last night's Jonas Brothers concert.
To keep the experiment pure, I had purposely avoided all contact with all things Jonas for the entire 14 1/2 minutes they've been famous -- no music, no images, no Internet, no written word whatsoever save for one sentence accidentally glimpsed when this Jonasmania all started: "The Jonas Brothers are the new Beatles."
What a grand experience for a Jonas Brothers virgin!
This was a high-production thriller of a concert from note one -- in a song about making the most out of "all this stress," which sort of rhymes with "no regrets" and "I'm about to break a sweat."
The arena echoed with the sound that can only be created when a mainly female crowd of 18,000 is faced with their favourite pop stars: A high-pitched EEEEEEEEE! that drills right into your brain and stays there long after it ends.
It was the background for the entire evening, at some points threatening to obliterate the music itself, but not quite.
Sound systems have come a long way since the early 1960s. So has stage production. These boys spared no expense for a spectacular "in-the-round" show that let the crowd experience the many sides of the Jonas Brothers.
It didn't take long to sort out who was who. Nick is the cute one. Joe is the tough one. And Kevin is the not-as-cute-nor-as-tough one -- but he played guitar most of the time.
Nick showed his sensitive side most convincingly. He played a heartfelt ballad on a white grand piano, noting that he has diabetes and dedicating the song -- A Little Bit Longer -- to the fight against diabetes. He added, "Don't ever stop fighting."
Nick is also the multi-talented one, demonstrating competence on guitar, piano and even drums.
JOE THE ROCKER
Joe, meanwhile, was the "rocker" of the brothers, wailing out such lyrics as "You gotta be be good to me, I'm gonna be be good to you" --yes: be be -- or later on while his bro played drums, "Live to party!" featuring a bit where Joe and Kevin were hoisted up on a giant crane to spray the crowd with what appeared to be liquid confetti. Rockers.
As far as I could tell, Jonas Brothers' material falls into two basic categories -- songs about love and songs about wishing you didn't screw up and lose said love -- and in two basic moods: tear the roof off or snuggle on the couch.
There were a couple that didn't seem to fit any of the above, like a song called Turn Right, with a telling line, "Somehow I'm to blame for this never-ending racetrack you call life," and also a cover of Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline.
Now that's something the Beatles never did: Chuck Berry yes, Neil Diamond never.
The opening acts I likewise treated with the clarity of hearing from the point of view of complete ignorance -- well, almost.
It was impossible to avoid 2007 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks or her incessantly-aired hit Tattoo, wherein a former love is compared to body art you're saving up to get lasered off.
With a four-piece band and four backup singers, Sparks wailed through a short set of the earnest, romantic pop songs that are the bread and butter of the Idols, ending with the turgid ballad No Air, in which the love of the desired man is likened to the very oxygen she needs to live!
Up first, a quartet of young men called Honor Society blasted through brisk, poppy songs that dealt with being in love ("I'm not over you") and in lust ("see you in the dark").
They look good enough to be screamed over. They seem to actually be singing and playing their own instruments and their songs are actually pretty catchy.
In short, Honor Society IS THE NEW JONAS BROTHERS!

Personally, I don't think Honor Society is the new Jonas Brothers but let's hope that they will rise to success as them. We are very proud of the gentlemen!
While it is unwise to ignore the musical tastes of young women lest you appear hopelessly out of touch, little girls scream over all sorts of things -- puppies, thunderstorms, androgynous pop idols.

"Bow tie aficionado"

It’s often a little too easy to take a few sardonic swipes at an act like the Jonas Brothers.
Yes, the trio comes out of the Disney mould.
Yes, the JoBro machine is huge — a massive marketing endeavour that involves cross-promotions, product placement, film appearances, TV spinoffs and a gargantuan amount of merchandising.
Yes, it’s inoffensive pop music — happy go-lucky stuff that sends throngs of fans emptying their lungs with abandon.
But, guess what? Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas put on one heck of a show.
It didn’t matter if 17,000 fans are made to wait for an extra hour at the gates for a production delay, the line-up at Rexall’s 118th Avenue entrance winding its way all the way over and around the Agricom until 7 p.m. Thursday night.
Fans might have wondered if it had anything to do with Kevin’s impromptu flight back home to New Jersey yesterday to ask his longtime girlfriend Danielle Deneasa to marry him (sorry, girls).
However, fans young and old — most gripping their own homemade poster professing love and affection for one Jonas or another — patiently held their breath for the moment when they could finally let it all out.
If there is one safe, wholesome place where — much to any parent’s delight — kids, tweens and teens can enjoy some wholesome entertainment, it’s at a Jonas Brothers concert.
Despite the delay at the gate, it didn’t take long for the JoBro machine to take over and catch up without a hitch.
Opener and bow tie aficionado Honor Society started things off with its own brand of squeaky-clean yet crunchy pop rock, the quartet delivering four songs in rapid-fire fashion to whet the crowd’s appetite.
American Idol winner Jordin Sparks followed with some old-fashioned R&B, showcasing a fine set of pipes and a whole lot of soul on a few tunes of her own, including her hit single Tattoo.
Korean pop phenomenon Wonder Girls followed for a quick one-off song and some tentative dance interaction with the audience, but what seemed like a cute and clever idea never really took off.
At that point, the crowd was growing restless and deafening screams followed any mention of the name “Jonas” — whether in the trailer for the upcoming animated Japanese movie Ponyo (which features the voice of other brother Frankie Jonas, a.k.a. “Bonus” Jonas), a Burger King commercial with the three Bros, or via a simple still frame of either Nick, Joe or Kevin’s pearly grins.
“Jonas, Jonas, Jonas!” chanted the sold-out crowd.
Lights out. Screams.
Queen’s We Will Rock You pumping out of the speakers. More screams.
The massive “in-the-round” stage’s lighting rigs lifting off and revealing the three brothers — Joe with the microphone, Kevin and Nick with guitars. Screams, more screams and plenty of “ohmygodohmygodohmygod.”
Sure, it’s easy to make a few sarcastic comments or snide remarks about the boys’ “purity rings” or the surface-level quality of their music — being young, being in love, that kind of stuff.
But what a show.
Joe doing a jump-kick during Paranoid.
Kevin pulling off his signature “guitar spins” during Play My Music.
Nick even talking about his struggle with diabetes in the middle of a tender, piano-laden A Little Bit Longer and telling the crowd, “You are my inspiration and I love you,” which instantly drove everyone bananas.
JoBromania was here and it blasted pop nugget after pop nugget — Year 3000, Much Better, and a raucous Burnin’ Up to wrap things up — amid a dazzling array of lasers, mirror balls, smoke, rotating/rising stages and strobe effects.
When it comes to having their fans eat from the palm of their hands and leaving them still wanting more, the JoBros are real pros.

Hey, Melody here. Sorry guys, but I have been without internet service all day and was busy all of yesterday so I'm trying to catch up on all the updates now.
Date: Jul 3, 2009 6:24 PM
Subject: LOVE (incase you missed it)
Body: We love you guys. Seriously. Your love and support keep us going, so we just want to say THANK YOU!
The past couple weeks have been amazing and very busy...and we're working hard to keep in touch with you on MySpace, YouTube, Twitter, FaceBook, SayNow, etc. You should know that we read every comment, every message and we respond as often as we possibly can. So stick with us...we can feel the love from you guys and it means the world to us, so keep the comments and messages coming!
Tour is going great...we're finally getting to meet so many of you in person...it's so awesome. We're finding new and different ways to meet you and party with you - impromptu, last-minute gatherings in different cities, more meet & greets and, of course, the FULL MOON CRAZY TOUR, which we're super excited for. When we say "we can't wait to party with you all summer long," we really REALLY mean it.
Again...we love you guys. LOVE.
Very sincerely,
Your Gentlemen

Honor Society Tour Diary: Tour Kickoff In Dallas!
Posted: 29 Jun 2009 | Melody
Last week, we officially kicked off the Summer with an amazing show at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium! It was truly an incredible experience to play in front of 50,000 fans… it’s something we’ll never forget.
We got to Cowboys Stadium early in the day and moved into our first tour bus! Last summer, we were touring in Alex’s mom’s minivan, so the bus is a HUGE upgrade. It’s our home for the summer and we’re pumped to hit the road.
We spent most of the day rehearsing and mentally preparing for the concert. Just before the show, Alex was jumping rope in the dressing room, while the rest of us were running through vocal warm-ups. At 6:45, we gathered just off stage, where Nick, Joe and Kevin gave us some amazing advice and words of encouragement. It was such a powerful moment…it was time to take the stage, we felt great…so energized…we were ready to rock!!
It is so hard to put into words how it felt to perform in a brand new stadium for so many awesome fans. We played “Over You,” “Full Moon Crazy,” “Nobody Has to Know,” and “See You in the Dark.” At the end of the show, we came back on stage for our final bows with the Jonas Brothers, Jordin Sparks, and Big Rob, and celebrated our first summer show.
At the end of the night, we boarded our bus, climbed into our bunks and hit the road. We just arrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma and can’t wait to meet some cool new friends in a city we have never been to.
We’ll be doing a lot more of these blogs as the summer continues, so stay glued to the Buzzworthy Blog for more updates, pictures, and videos… We want you to be a part of this. We want to see all of YOU on the road this summer!
